Emergent

EMERGENT, which literally means in the process of coming into being or becoming prominent. This exhibition is a manifestation of the spirit of artists who struggle in conducting studio research in a challenging situation.

As we know, 2020 was a challenging year with many obstacles and constraints which had the situation very critical in many fields. Online lessons have become commonplace, and students who have had to undertake online Master class sessions face many challenges.
However, though they face many difficulties in their studios, the students’ spirit have not waned. This group exhibition shares their resilience and commitment to the studio research project.

Thirteen artists will display various artworks with different art styles and perspectives. The participating artists are Aisyah Razak, Badrulzzaman, Burhanuddin Bakri, Faiz Yunus, Fara Rashid, Hafiz AJ, Heidhir Hamdan, Husna Md Nor, Luqman Alhakim, MieraKamsano, Myza Ramli, Shuhada Mazlan and Taufik Abdullah.
Taufik Abdullah combines symbols of self-experientiality that reflect the influence of his environment such as the world, nature and his relations with other human beings.

Faiz Yunus is guided by both emotions and form throughout the process of nurturing and developing his artworks. He explores the capacity to create mesmerising artwork.

Badrulzzaman uses the effect of mark-making through the process of painting. Pigments change colours and natural texture builds upon the surface, creating stunning and interesting abstract effects.

Husna Md Nor uses locks and CCTV cameras in her artworks to represent the need to stay safe in daily life.
Burhanuddin Bakri uses Islamic calligraphy in his works, expanding the idea of two-dimensional Islamic calligraphy into three-dimensional forms and continuity in space. His idea is about the combination or cross-discipline between traditional and modern approaches.
Myza Ramli uses a wooden block (box) with wooden chopsticks that make her artworks seem like a cage or jail to represent crowds of people. Needless to say, the images in her artworks are based on her imagination.

MieraKamsano uses the scanography method to create new decorative art. Using objects such as jewellery, coins, artificial flowers and other daily use objects, she manipulates form by experimenting with effects produced by a scanner.
Aisyah Razak’s collage artwork uses imperfect human face images to criticise the artificial beauty that is often associated with celebrities. She believes that a  pretty face is only ephemeral.

Fara Rashid integrates the traditional technique of animation by drawing each paper to create a movement of her object. Each frame is drawn by hand. The technique was the dominant form of animation in cinema until the advent of computer animation.

Hafiz AJ is inspired by his heritage and cultural identity which are the elements close to him. As an artist, he likes to refer to the origins and background in the creation of art.

Shuhada Mazlan’s artwork is inspired by nature and the relationship between a mother and daughter. Memories of her mother and her stitching skills are apparent and represent the meaning of love.

Heidhir Hamdan uses semiotic or the study of symbols body posture, animal masks, tech brands and local scenes amongst them  as the counteract of his storytelling or commentary towards the idea of escalation in the digital age.

Luqman Alhakim works towards developing and interpreting dynamic individual and social activities that have become important to cultures over time, such as gender, age, life experiences, beliefs and values. Images are produced, communicated, accepted and viewed in a personal, social, cultural and historical context.

Organising an art exhibition is the process of gaining another experience in life through critical thinking.
Art has a major responsibility in showcasing the cultures of all communities and being able to capture them by creating a platform for artists to show the diversity through their art pieces.

As a gallery that actively promotes and provides a platform for young or budding artists to showcase their talent, Galeri Prima believes that this online exhibition is an opportunity for these seniors as well as emerging and young artists to achieve their full potential.

The artists who participate in this exhibition show how art has become a vital aspect of our lives. It inspires and reminds us that we are capable of creating. Adapting to the new norm in Malaysian, we bring to you an online art exhibition, EMERGENT, which will be held from Feb 17 until March 10, 2021.
