Awang Damit Ahmad is a respected figure and considered to be one of the most consistent contemporary Malaysian painters from the point of view of objectives, philosophy, style and subject, in the art scene.
This Awang Damit Ahmad’s 10th solo is on view at Galeri Prima from 26 March – 7 April 2021, opens with a hi-tea reception on Saturday, 27 March 2021, 230pm – 430pm at Galeri Prima.
Displaying a total of 57 artworks, Awang Damit Garismega series came as a result of Awang Damit’s visit to Japan in 2016. The atmosphere and the huge Gundam robot gave a strong visual impact to anyone who saw it, including Awang himself. Besides the Gundam shape which was schematic and geometric, he was fascinated by the structures of buildings and huge complexes in that city, which to him seemed to combine lines and shapes of various scales and textures. Altogether, they gave a visual impact which fascinated him.
The paintings are based on a reflective self-referential experience encapsulating a journey and traces of a humble livelihood as a farmer as well as the plight of fishermen facing the challenge of time and nature. They are based on the concept of simplicity, harmony and balance, as demonstrated through figuration and abstraction, with qualities veering between intimate and expressionistic, and intellectual and intuitive. These works speak of the essence of human value, society, culture and environment through research, experience and memories. In their entirety, the works can be viewed as a continuous journey that searches for meaning and value in life.
